Following the Sherpa Discovery I training course by Sand Sherpa, this experience completes the introduction to off-road driving and equips participants with the skills and knowledge to pass through rocky terrain, make mountain ascents and descents, cross wadi beds and choose the best camping and resting spots in the UAE's rocky terrain. The session will also cover the importance of gearing and differential locks, upslope and downslope techniques, self-recovery and assisted recovery techniques while giving participants the opportunity to practise over different types of terrain and conquer obstacles. DISCOVERY I

Half-day event (4 hours)

THIS EVENT IS DESIGNED AS A FIRST​ INTRODUCTION INTO OFF-ROAD DRIVING

Under the close supervision of your off-road guide you'll learn the essentials, before being led across the desert sands in  your own vehicle/Sherpa 4x4

 

Basic driving and simple recovery techniques are part of the course

We meet up at Sand Sherpa HQ in Al Sajja, Sharjah, where we start off with a 30 minute briefing before heading to our training area (15 mins drive away).

 

Our Driving Sherpa, Fraser Martin, is a qualified Land Rover Lead Instructor and has designed our half-day induction to the essentials of off-road desert driving.

 

Exercises in slope descents and ascents are interspersed with track driving and navigating less trodden routes, while the group makes frequent stops to evaluate obstacles and review driving theory and recovery techniques when required.

 

Supporting vehicles are equipped with water and all necessary recovery gear, while attendance is limited to a maximum of five vehicles (one driver per vehicle).

 

Our focus is on participant and vehicle safety and ensuring that you leave with the skills and knowledge to venture into the sands with friends and family.

  • ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT

    Understanding the essential equipment required to be taken on any off-road excursion

  • VEHICLE OPERATION OFF-ROAD

    Understanding the application of high and low gearing and engaging differential locks; as well as standard gear selection through different terrain

  • READING THE TERRAIN

    Understanding how to select a safe route through the dunes; and how to negotiate steep dunes (ascent and descent) - theory and practical on a charted course

  • DRIVING & RECOVERY

    This involves a trip through our charted course on the desert sands and includes the basics of vehicle recovery

TO OFF-ROAD DRIVING

SHERPA

READY

Full-day event (8 hours)

THIS EVENT PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE INTRODUCTION INTO OFF-ROAD DRIVING 

Sherpa Ready is an advanced sand driving, full-day, course for those who have been out as part of a group and now feel ready to take their skills to the next level. Ideally, you will have completed the Sherpa Discovery I course on Sand Driving and have been out five or six times since, to really learn your car and be confident in its abilities.

 

Having already covered the basics of equipment, momentum, technique and observation,
in Sherpa Ready you will discover:

  • PREPARING A GROUP

  • LEADING AND RUNNING A CONVOY

  • CHOOSING A LINE

  • CROSSING OPEN GROUND

  • RIDGE RIDING

  • ADVANCED SLOPE DRIVING

  • ADVANCED RECOVERY -WINCHES AND SAND ANCHORS

  • ADVANCED RECOVERY - SAND LADDERS

  • NAVIGATION BY LINE OF SIGHT

  • NAVIGATION BY GPS

The course includes a lunch stop, as well as a classroom session at the start and various exercises during the day. This will provide you with the confidence to lead a group safely and successfully.

Prepare for this course by carrying your own basic equipment: jack and wheel brace, baseboard, tyre deflating and inflating equipment, gloves, shackles and towing strap (correctly rated and marked) and of course, your own shovel!

Water will be available, but bring along any additional drinks you might need and any snacks that are required. This is a driving course, so there should be no strong beverages and no children as passengers. You may bring one colleague, friend or helper.

The course is generally conducted on a Friday or Saturday,
but special arrangements can be made if there is enough interest for a midweek programme.

 

Sherpa Instructors are solely responsible for managing the event throughout the day and attendees should comply with guidance to ensure successful completion 

 

*Sherpa Ready events are non-accredited, but mandatory to rent a Sherpa Expedition Trailer and attend Sherpa Expeditions and Sherpa Drives. We aim for all attendees to display skills taught during the day, retain key facts on safety, and demonstrate the principles of safe vehicle operation in an off-road environment, as well as show consideration for the desert as a natural habitat
